Financial Caregiving

1)

Make sure your family knows where to find personal and financial documents in an emergency. These include:

a. bank and brokerage statements
b. wills
c. insurance policies
d. pension records.

2) Obtain access to bank and brokerage accounts. To write checks or withdraw funds, you should become a joint owner of a bank account or simple make arrangements through the bank to be authorized to conduct transactions.
3) Consider direct deposit of any benefit checks and automatic
payment of important, recurring bills.
4) Try to make sure your loved one is properly insured.
5) Discuss the importance of wills and estate planning.
6) Consider "durable power of attorney".
This is a legal document giving one or more people the authority to handle finances, property or other personal matters if your loved one becomes mentally or physically incompetent.
7) Suggest a "living will" or other instructions about future medical
Care.
